Currently, you can create boards and projects and you can delete boards and projects. What you can’t do is “open” a board or project in a different folder location or “close” a board or project (allowing you to re-open it later). What happens when you have 1000s of boards all from different projects – some web design, some video, some just idea gathering, etc.? How do you manage organizing that content on your system, or across different external hard drives? Backing up that content in multiple places? Keeping items separate based on projects, different companies, different users? Or sharing aspects of those boards or projects with others for collaborative work? Most users won’t want to have to bundle stuff up in some weird way to share it, or make other collaborators clone a git repository, etc. They just want to grab the folder for their current board/workspace and send that to whoever and just have it work.
This feature request is a big conceptual shift, but probably one that isn’t hard to implement and is better to do in the beginning stages of GL Dash before you have users with many serious projects created in it.
I’m requesting that instead of GL dash being the container for ALL boards and projects at the same time, it acts as a hub for individual “Islands” of information. These “islands” exist as individual containers of information on the system and in the Dashboard (but the dashboard allows for easy sharing of information between these islands). All of these islands can all be open at the same time as they are currently, but they would also be able to be closed and re-opened. Templates and media would be able to be shared between these islands but now live in both (unless imported as a reference folder).
So in the “Boards” sidebar, in addition to Create/Delete for boards, you allow users to Open/Close boards. When creating a board, pop up a modal asking the user where on the drive the board should be created. ALL necessary GL files to open and close that board now live in that folder. Users can move that folder on their own system, to other systems, etc. Anywhere, if they have the folder that contains that “island,” they can “visit it” by opening that board/folder on any system with GL dash.
When sharing media from one open board to another open board, that media would be either copied, moved, or referenced (option given to the user). Reference folders would automatically keep referencing the same location. Sequence presets, MotionFast templates, etc. would be copied with all necessary files (not moved or referenced).
I think this would be an AMAZING update for GL Dash, and solve a lot of future problems you’re going to run into with data mingling and collision. Portability is probably the one biggest issue with GL Dash right now, and this would fix it entirely.
