Cross Transitions

Transitions in the Video Editor are preset, deterministic animations rendered on-device — no AI models, no generation cost, and the same result on every export.

Transition kinds

  • Cross Transition — blends two adjacent clips on the same snapped channel; the outgoing and incoming clips overlap for the duration of the transition.
  • Transition In / Transition Out — entrance and exit animations for a single clip.

Add a cross transition

  1. Place two clips next to each other on a snapped video channel.
  2. Select the second clip, or click the transition icon that appears on the seam between the two clips.
  3. In the right sidebar, open Transitions, click +, and enable Cross Transition.
  4. Pick a Type, an Easing, and a Duration.

Picking a transition opens a proper browser — search, categories with counts, and animated previews that play at the length and curve you set, so a 1.5 s Ease Out looks like one before you apply it. Cross, In and Out are a switch at the top, so all three can be set without closing the window. You can also right-click a clip and choose Cross Transition from the context menu.

Types include Cross Fade, Slide, Parallax, Wipe, Push, Zoom, Scale Swap, Side by Side, Dip to Black, and Radial Wipe.

Advanced transitions

The Advanced category holds full GPU renderers with their own options and sound:

  • Zoom Blur — a clean zoom, crossfade and shader-based radial blur, with its own whoosh (the sound belongs to the transition: it previews, mutes and exports with it).
  • Hand Impact Slide — an alpha-video hand swipes the clips away, with impact motion and radial blur.
  • 3D Carousel — the two clips mount as panels on a turning carousel with real perspective; direction, panel spacing, radius, FOV, motion blur and swing ease are all options.
  • Louver Flip — the frame splits into venetian-blind slats that flip in place, staggered across the frame.
  • Vortex Swirl — the outgoing clip twists into a centre vortex; the incoming one untwists out of it.

Each exposes its options in the browser and under the per-row cog, and exports identically to the preview.

Upload your own: the Upload Transition action imports .js, .zip and .gltransition packages into the Advanced gallery with a LOCAL badge — packaged previews, sound, options and positioned image/alpha-video objects included.

Cross transitions need overlapping clips, so they are unavailable on free-positioned (voice / unsnapped) channels. The setting is preserved if the clip later moves to a snapped channel.

Transition In and Out

The + menu also toggles Transition In and Transition Out — Fade, Slide, Zoom, Wipe, Dip to Black, Radial Wipe — each with its own easing and duration (0.1–3 s).

Easing and duration

  • Built-in cross transition duration runs from 0.05 to 2 s (default 1 s).
  • Installable Advanced Transition packages can recommend a default duration from 0.05 to 30 s. The package default is used when you first select it; changing Length afterward overrides it for that transition. The overlap cannot exceed the available length of either adjacent clip.
  • Easing presets range from Linear and Smooth to Sine, Cubic, Expo, Circ, Back, Bounce, and Elastic curves.

Custom transitions

Pick Custom as the type to open the Transition Builder and hand-author the movement — position, scale, rotation, and opacity keyframes for the outgoing and incoming clips.

Executable .gltransition packages can also add custom GLSL, Three.js scenes, packaged media, audio, and controls. Package authors set the initial timing with the descriptor field defaultDuration in seconds; omitting it keeps the standard 1-second default.
